The English illustrator Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was in every respect a modern woman. For the publication of her plant collections she used the latest technology, the recently invented cyanotype. In 1843 she used the process to create the first photo book in history, with images of breathtaking beauty and originality which often look like modern art.
At first Anna Atkins worked for and with her father, the zoologist John George Children; later she chose the objects for her scientific compositions herself: algae and ferns. Atkins placed them on light-sensitive paper that turned dark blue in water after being developed, with the exception of the places that had been covered by the plants. Initially alone, and then with her friend Anne Dixon, she produced well over 10,000 copies of her photograms and assembled them in several books like albums. Today these rare copies are regarded as treasures and are preserved in museums and libraries.

Recent years have seen a renewed interest in the painter Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993), whose striking landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, and sensual nudes demonstrate her synthesis of traditional painting style and modern subject matter. Born in Germany and exiled to Sweden during the Nazi regime, Laserstein created a diverse and extensive body of work over five decades.
Incorporating essays on Laserstein's work in Berlin before her exile and her reception in Sweden, images of her art, and unpublished archival material, this book furthers our understanding of the artist's life and creative output. Iris Müller-Westerman and Anna-Carola Krausse include art from the whole of Laserstein's career, including previously unpublished work. Other contributions build on debates about gender and queerness in the artist's work and analyze her assimilation strategies in Sweden. Max Beckmann (1884-1950), the outstanding Expressionist painter, is regarded as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Beckmann's work reflected the social upheavals of his time, not only in his art but also through his extensive correspondence and diaries. He was an observer, a gentleman, a loner, and a reflective witness of his age. It is especially in his expressive self-portraits that we believe we can get closer to Beckmann's multi-faceted nature. Max Beckmann traces his artistic career and the principal stations of his life, from his years in Berlin and Frankfurt to his exile in Amsterdam and America. In 1867, Claude Monet produced as series of paintings that opened up a new artistic perspective on the modern city. The artist visited the famous Louvre museum not, as was typical, to copy the works of the Old Masters hanging in its halls, but to paint the pulsating life on the streets of Paris from the balcony of the building. The results were three remarkable cityscapes depicting views of Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, the Jardin de l'Infante, and the Quai du Louvre. In these works, Monet quite literally turned his back on art-historical tradition, directing his gaze instead to the present of the growing French metropolis.

How do artists ensure that their works will still be known in later centuries? How do they reach a public that lies far away geographically? In around 1600, printed graphics were the answer. The outstanding works of Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) show us how international success could be achieved in this way.
Printed graphics are easy to reproduce and distribute, and so around 1600, they became the perfect ambassadors for themselves in the diplomatic service of art. The artist group Brücke is Germany's most important contribution to international modernism. The group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four young architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together they developed a painting style with vivid colors, simplified forms, and large color fields that express internal feelings rather than reproducing an external reality. The group disbanded in 1913, but their collaboration and marketing strategies have been inspirational for several generations of artists.
These young artists wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and break with the prevailing moral norms of the day. They were interested in topics like man and nature; the naked body; portraits; self-portraits; the merging of life and art; and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin.
