Ce catalogue en français accompagne une grande exposition annoncée au MACBA de Lausanne à l'occasion des 100 ans de la publication du Manifeste du Surréalisme par André Breton. Cette exposition rend hommage au mouvement international et aux publications qu'il a générées. Son titre fait notamment référence à la revue Le Grand Jeu, qui a apporté de grandes innovations dans le domaine de la mise en page éditoriale. L'exposition Le Grand Jeu comporte deux volets. Le volet historique est structuré en trois séquences autour du jeu d'échecs, du jeu de Tarot et du jeu de dés à l'intérieur desquelles sont développées des notions structurantes du mouvement comme l'ésotérisme ou le hasard. Mais les vertiges suscités par cette libération de l'imaginaire ne cessent d'influencer notre manière d'envisager le corps, le langage et les objets dans leur capacité à se métamorphoser. Dans son second volet, l'exposition est donc également l'occasion pour des artistes contemporain.e.s de poursuivre l'élan de cet esprit libertaire, à la manière d'un grand cadavre exquis.
Ce catalogue en français accompagne une exposition consacrée à la sculpture de Matisse. D'abord présentée à Zurich puis au musée Matisse à Nice au printemps 2020, cette rétrospective est axée sur la méthode qu'utilisait Matisse pour réaliser presque toutes ses sculptures les plus importantes : il commençait par un modelage d'aspect naturaliste pour abstraire de plus en plus ses figures jusqu'à une stylisation radicale. Mais il conservait les états décisifs comme sculptures autonomes, dévoilant ainsi les étapes du processus de création. Les différentes sources d'inspiration de Matisse - nus photographiques, modèles antiques et africains - ainsi que des photographies montrant l'artiste travaillant la sculpture complètent cette étude.
Ce catalogue publié à l'occasion d'une exposition au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Winterthur présente 130 dessins du maître suisse, dont de nombreux inédits. Qu'il s'agisse d'études pour des peintures ou de dessins indépendants, ces travaux témoignent de l'évolution de l'artiste et de ses grands thèmes : paysages, natures mortes et nus y occupent une grande place.

In the 1920s, German-Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879-1940) began his long-lasting engagement with polyphonic art-multi-voiced way of painting analogous to music.
A relentless experimenter, Klee began these studies while teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau, developed them further during his tenure at the art academy in Dusseldorf, and brought them to conclusion after his return to Switzerland in 1933. In this book, distinguished art historian Oskar Batschmann explores Klee's seminal painting Ad Parnassum (1932). Painted shortly after the artist's departure from the Bauhaus, it symbolises a new era, also one of Klee's own self-discovery. Batschmann documents how the artist strove for a connection of music and painting in his colour hues and in the rhythmic movement of coloured dots.
Richly illustrated, this book places Klee's polyphonic understanding of art in an art-historical context by using this key work and offers insight into the synesthetic thinking that emerged in the art world during that time.
Giovanni Segantini's (1858-99) three paintings La Vita-La Natura-La Morte (Becoming-Being-Passing) of 1898/99 do not reveal at first glance anything about their equally complex and interesting background. Originally planned for the 1900 Paris Exposition of 1900 as a gigantic, multimedia "Alpine symphony" panorama 722 ft long and 66 ft high, Segantini was forced to reduce his work to three purely pictorial main paintings, owing to a lack of financial means. When he died in 1899, whilst still working on it, he left behind an incomplete triptych that was intended to embody "the spirit of nature, of life, and of death." In this book, Swiss art historian and Segantini-expert Juerg Albrecht traces this monumental landmark piece in the artist's oeuvre as one of the last programmatic works of fin de siecle art. Apart from its genesis, the book explains, as well the cycle of life and death that the three paintings visualise, whose origins Segantini sought both privately and creatively in the mountains of the upper Engadine valley during his lifetime.

Der Maler Hans Emmenegger (1866-1940) ist einer der eigenwilligsten Künstler der frühen Schweizer Moderne. Karoline Beltinger, Restauratorin und Kunsttechnologin, hat Emmeneggers Werkprozess und Maltechnik umfassend untersucht und legt ihre Forschungsergebnisse in diesem Buch vor. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Jahren 1901-1905, in denen der Künstler seine Maltechnik systematisch dokumentierte. Neben Emmeneggers sogenanntem Maltechnik-Notizbuch wurden auch seine Tagebücher ausgewertet und technologische Analysen an Gemälden durchgeführt. Der Band erörtert die Gründe, die Emmenegger zu seinen Aufzeichnungen bewegten, schildert seine Suche nach Sujets in der freien Natur und dokumentiert die Hilfsmittel und Materialien, die er zum Malen einsetzte. Untersucht wird auch die Rolle von vorbereitenden Bleistiftskizzen, Fotografien und Farbnotizen. Rekonstruiert werden zudem Emmeneggers Testreihen zur Lösung technischer Probleme. Augusto Giacometti (1877-1947) zählt zu den herausragenden Schweizer Malern in der Nachfolge des Jugendstils und des Symbolismus und gilt als Wegbereiter der Abstraktion. Die ab 1899 geschaffenen abstrakten Pastelle sowie die ungegenständlichen Gemälde - die Chromatischen Fantasien von 1910 bis 1917 - brachten Giacometti nach seinem Tod den Ruf eines «Pioniers der abstrakten Malerei» ein.
Das vom Schweizerischen Institut für Kunstwissenschaft SIK-ISEA akribisch erarbeitete Werkverzeichnis der rund 560 Gemälde, Wandbilder, Mosaike und Glasgemälde präsentiert Augusto Giacomettis Schaffen in zwei reich illustrierten Bänden. Die einzelnen Werke werden kommentiert und in einem wissenschaftlichen Apparat technisch und rezeptionsgeschichtlich detailliert dokumentiert. 2024 marks the centenary of the publication of André Breton's Surrealist Manifesto, and thus the birth of the Surrealist movement. This German language book celebrates 100 years of Surrealism, combining historical retrospection, interpretation, and the perspective of contemporary artists who explore Surrealist themes and forms in their work. It is based on the Surrealist literary magazine Le Grand Jeu, which was published between 1928 and 1930.
Games to which the Surrealists referred are a core theme of the volume: chess and the «Jeu de Marseille,» a special set of tarot cards created by the Surrealists in the south of France, where many had to flee from German occupation between 1940 and 1944. Alongside, the essays investigate topics such as identity, metamorphosis, esotericism, kabbalah, and magic, as well as speculation, abstraction, and automatism. Moreover, new light is shed on the female members and affiliates of the Surrealist movement, including Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Suzanne Duchamp, Leonor Fini, Gladys Hynes, Meret Oppenheim, Dorothea Tanning, and others.
The book is also an homage to the never-published fourth issue of Le Grand Jeu, which has been preserved as a maquette and is reproduced here in facsimile images.
Hans Aeschbacher (1906-1980) war eine der markantesten Künstlerpersönlichkeiten der Schweizer Nachkriegszeit. Bis in die frühen 1960er-Jahre gehörte er, neben Max Bill, zu den führenden Bildhauern des Landes. Auf subtile Weise beeinflusste sein Schaffen eine ganze Generation von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern in der Schweiz, von Bernhard Luginbühl und Mariann Grunder bis zu Markus Raetz. Aeschbacher schuf ein umfangreiches plastisches Werk, das in den Sammlungen aller wichtigen Schweizer Kunstmuseen vertreten ist. Die präsentesten Zeugen seines Könnens sind jedoch die zahlreichen Arbeiten im öffentlichen Raum in der Schweiz, in Deutschland und Österreich, viele davon monumentale Freiplastiken.
Diese erste umfassende Monografie über Hans Aeschbacher seit mehr als vier Jahrzehnten beleuchtet sein Schaffen ebenso wie seine Persönlichkeit und sein Umfeld.
